The Oath of the Soul before She Comes to the World
16. After he shows him all this and tells him all this, one of the two angels, who is the good inclination, says to him, “The Creator told me to walk with you, I and the evil inclination. Swear to me that you will observe the whole Torah, to learn, to teach, to observe, and to do.” He swore to him. After that, he said to him, “Go forth from your land and from your kindred,” to a lowly body.
17. When he emerges from his mother’s abdomen, an angel will grab him by the hand and by the neck and will make him forget the Torah, and write on his mouth with his finger, “Do not forget the oath you swore to Me.” If the person does, and the oath is kept, he is given all that they showed him in the Garden of Eden. If he merits more, they will give him more, as we learned, “Learn much Torah and you will be given a great reward.”
