The Woman Whom You Gave to Be with Me
65. The Creator watches everything and observes all the actions. He brings everyone to judgment, whether good or bad, as it is written, “For God shall bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
66. How much should one beware of one’s iniquities, so as not to sin before the holy king? A person who performs a commandment, that commandment ascends and stands before the Creator, and says, “I am from so and so, who has performed me.” The Creator appoints it before Him to watch it every day, to do good to the person thanks to it. If a person commits a transgression against the words of Torah, the transgression ascends before Him and says, “I am from so and so, who has committed me.” The Creator appoints it, and it stands there, to watch it, to destroy him, as it is written, “And when the Lord saw it, He spurned them, because of the anger of His sons and daughters,” and He saw that transgression that stands before Him.
67. If he repents, it is written, “The Lord has also removed your sin; you shall not die.” He removed that sin from before Him so as not to look at it, and to do good to him. This is why it is written, “Do not look on the stubbornness of this people, or on their wickedness or their sin,” so He would not look at them. From this, it means that it is written, “Your iniquity is marked before Me.”
68. “The man said, ‘The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate.’” This means that Adam and Eve were created together, adhered to one another in one body, as it is written, “whom You gave to be with me,” and it is not written, “who is standing before you.” Had it been written, “which is given to you,” it would be so, as with the words “gave to be with me.” However, it is written, “stands,” which means that she was standing alone and not adhered to him.
69. But it is written, “And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make for him a help made against him.’” Thus, his woman was created along and was against him, not adhered to him as one body. Rather, “I will make for him,” meaning now I will make for him that she will be against him, but before that, they were created adhered to one another in one body.
So it is indeed that Adam was alone, that he did not have assistance in his Nukva [female] since she was adhered to his ribs. What He said, “I will make for him an assistance,” means that so it is. It is not written “I will create for him a help,” since it is written, “He created them male and female,” which means that right when he was created, he was already a male and a female. However, it is written, “I will make,” meaning I will correct, that the Creator took her from his ribs and corrected her with a correction, and brought her before him, and then Adam had intercourse with his wife and she was of assistance to him.
