And He Came to a Place
14. “And he came to a place.” What place? In the place where the Temple is destined to stand, and he prayed there. It was the heat of the day, and he wanted to walk more, but he could not.
15. He prayed in that place and began to complain to his Maker that the governance of the sun had been removed from him, as it is written, “and he slept there,” implying complaint [in Hebrew].
It is written, “the sun has set,” meaning that the sun has been removed from him and was given to Esau.
16. What did Jacob do? He began to cry. Promptly, “And he took of the stones of the place, and placed it under his head,” to torment his soul, as it is written, “And they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it,” which was to torment his soul.
17. “And he took of the stones of the place,” meaning he took only one stone.
