Some of That Red, Red Thing
1. “And Esau said to Jacob, ‘Please feed me some of that red, red thing.” Why is “red” written twice? It is because all that Esau has is red, so he is red, as it is written, “And the first came out red.”
2. His stew is red, as it is written, “Please feed me some of that red, red thing.” His land is red, as it is written, “in the land of Seir, the country of Edom” [Adom means “red” in Hebrew], and his people are red, as it is written, “Esau, the father of Edom.”
And the one who is to avenge him is red, as it is written, “My beloved is white and red.” His clothing is also red, as it is written, “Why is there red on Your garment,” and it is written, “Who is this coming from Edom.”
