As an Eagle Stirs Up Its Nest
238. We did not find anyone as merciful over his children as that eagle. This is why it is written, “And the face of a lion to the right, and the face of an ox to the left. What is the place of the eagle? In the place where Jacob stands, in the middle line, which includes right and left, as it is written, “The way of the eagle in the sky,” in ZA, the middle line, since he is merciful toward his children, and in judgment toward others. Similarly, the Creator, who contains right and left, Hesed and judgment, leads His people like that eagle.
239. “The Lord is alone, and there is no foreign god with Him.” He is alone, as it is written, “And the Lord walks before them.” “And there is no foreign god with Him” means there is no leader to Israel, not an angel or another appointee, who are called a “foreign god.” This is as Moses said, “If Your face does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.” This is as it is written, “The Lord is alone, and there is no foreign god with Him.”
240. Happy are Israel, for the Creator leads them. This is what is written about them: “For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel for His merit.” It is also written, “For the Lord will not abandon His people for His great name, since they are adhered to one another. Israel are adhered to His great name, and this is why the Creator will not leave them, for wherever they are, the Creator is with them.
