The Lord Will Guard Your Going Out and Your Coming In

132. “The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from now and forever.” “Will guard your going out,” correct. But “and your coming in”? After all, one who comes is not afraid, so as to need guarding. However, that man placed a holy inscription to his home with the words of the upper name, the Mezuzah; he is guarded from anything. When that person comes out from his dwelling place into the house’s gate, he raises his eyes and sees the holy inscription, and examines his door. When the person walks out, it accompanies him and guards him. When the person walks in, it declares ahead of him, “Mind the honor of the form of the holy King.” All this is because of that inscription of the holy name that was inscribed in his door.

133. It is not enough for a person to be guarded in his home, but rather, the Creator guards him when he comes in and when he walks out, as it is written, “The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from now and forever.” Happy are Israel in this world and in the next world.

134. That evil spirit that dwells among the doors, woe to a person who does not know how to beware of it and does not inscribe the door of his house with the upper, holy name, the Mezuzah, to be with him. That evil spirit has 365 evil attendants that slander during the 365 days of the year, each operating in its own day. They are all with the person each day of the year, slandering him from above and from below. They are all with him day and night. In the day, they slander him, and in the night, they afflict him in his dream.

135. When it goes out to slander him, when he enters his home, they put their hands on his shoulders and say, “Woe to so and so, who went out from the authority of his master.” Woe to that person in this world and in the next world. For this reason, the faithful ones must be inscribed in everything, inscribed in the inscription of their master, in commandments, so that all the sides of the evil kinds will fear them and they will be guarded in this world and in the next world. Happy are Israel; it is written about them, “And your people are all righteous; they will forever inherit the land.”
